These thought patterns have resulted in fuelling maladaptive behaviours such as alcohol or drug abuse, isolation, anger or self-harm. In addition, thoughts that are self- defeating may also reinforce cooccurring issues with depression and anxiety that often accompany Substance Use Disorder (SUD).

How Does Cognitive Behaviour
Therapy Work.

Unwelcomed thoughts that may lead to negative feelings of self and destructive behaviours can be changed by using methods of CBT. Specifically, CBT helps clients look at how their thoughts and emotions relate to each other and can result in a pattern of behaviour. Destructive and irrational belief systems change as clients learn to understand where they come from and how their beliefs may fail to measure up to reality. CBT helps people analyze negative thought patterns and improve coping skills. Through this process, clients learn how to anticipate triggers and their related reactions to those triggers so that they can better prepare for the future.

CBT is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion) and how we act (behaviour) all interact together. Specifically, our thoughts determine our feelings and our behaviour.

Additionally, Katayoun uses Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT). This is a type cognitive therapy which focuses on resolving emotional and behavioural problems. The common goal is to change perceived irrational beliefs to more rational ones. REBT encourages a person to identify their general and irrational beliefs (e.g. I must be perfect") and subsequently persuades the person to challenge these false beliefs through reality testing.
